There has been a delay in sending out the association dues statements. They will be going out over the next two weeks, and will be due by October 31, 2011. Late fees will not be assessed unless payment isn't received by October 31.

The Cherry Hills Homeowners Association Annual Meeting will be held July 27 at 6:30pm at the Windsor Road Christian Church.

Upcoming Countywide Residential Electronics Collection - May 8

The next opportunity for areawide residents to drop off old or unwanted electronics items for recycling, at no charge, will be on Saturday May 8, 2010. The residential electronics collection will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The News-Gazette Distribution Center located at 3202 Apollo Drive in Champaign.

The Countywide Residential Electronics Collections are organized to allow residents in vehicles to drop off unwanted electronics items in a safe and relatively quick manner. Teams of volunteers and workers unload vehicles that line up to be emptied at four or five drop off stations in a ‘pit row’ style. Approximately 75 persons will be volunteering or working onsite to unload each vehicle and keep the line of vehicles moving as safely and efficiently as possible.

Residents each can bring up to 10 electronics items to the event.

List of Acceptable Electronics Items To Be Collected From Residents For Free:

televisions (any size or any type of TV, including console or projection TVs)
computers
laptops
computer monitors
printers
scanners
keyboards and mice
mobile phones cables
zip drives
fax machines
VCR players
DVD players
MP3 players
PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistants)
video game consoles

This collection is coordinated by the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission and sponsored by the local government jurisdictions of Champaign County, City of Urbana, City of Champaign, and Village of Savoy. Also a sponsor, The News-Gazette has offered its Distribution Center as the host site for the 2010 collection events. The University of Illinois College of Fine and Applied Arts and the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center are assisting with promotion of the collection events. The contractor for the May 8, 2010 electronics collection is Vintage Tech Recycling, Inc., based in Romeoville, IL.

In 2008, Illinois passed legislation that set statewide recycling and reuse goals to be met by electronics manufacturers for all covered electronics devices. (Refer to Illinois Public Act 95-0959, known as the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act)

Data Security Vintage Tech Recycling, Inc., recycling contractor for the electronics collection events, will meet or exceed the data security requirements and standards as set forth in the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, utilizing data wiping software and/or hardware shredding processes. The recycling contractor assumes no responsibility for information left on any hard drive, nor does the event coordinator and host site.

Yard Waste Collection Coming

As the warm weather arrives and you start to think about cleaning up your yard for spring, be sure to remember the requirements for the City of Champaign yard waste collection:

Materials must be in 30-gallon paper yard waste bags. No Plastic Bags. Twigs and branches may be bundled with non-metallic twine or placed in paper yard waste bags. Branches cannot be larger than two inches in diameter and 3 1/2 feet long. Bundles cannot be larger than 18 inches in diameter. Materials must be placed within ten feet of the curb of a public street by 6:00 a.m. to ensure pickup on your scheduled day. On heavier collection days, your pickup may be later than normal or even the next day.

Dates for the Champaign yard waste collection have not been set, but will be posted on the City of Champaign website when they are available.

Calling All Cherry Hills Gardeners!

Plans are in swing to create a community garden in your neighborhood on about two acres of the land just to the south of Barkstall School.

Please join us Sunday, March 14, 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. in the library at Barkstall for a planning meeting for Good Ground Community Garden.

Planting a Parkway Tree

If you're thinking about planting a tree in your parkway (the strip between the sidewalk and the street), there are a few things to consider:

If you live in phases 4-12, you need a city permit to plant a tree. You can download this permit from the city website.
You can participate in the Champaign Share-the-Cost Program. For $100, the city will plant a tree for you in the parkway. You agree to water it during dry times, but the city purchases and plants the tree for you. This program requires advance enrollment -- enroll by February 2010 for planting in spring of 2010. Fall planting requires enrollment by the previous August. More information about this program is available on the city website.
If you don't participate in the city's share program, or aren't eligible because you live in phases 1-3, the Cherry Hills Homeowners Association will reimburse you $50 for the cost of any tree planted in your parkway. The only stipulation is that the tree itself cost more than $100. This cost does not include labor for installation. Trees must also be on the city's approved tree's list. An application for reimbursement (including receipt and tree type) should be submitted to the association treasurer.
